Flights to Costa Rica: Flying to Costa Rica is simple. All major airlines operate daily flights to
San Jose(airport code SJO), the capital of Costa Rica. Direct flights are available from Los Angeles, Dallas,
Houston, Atlanta, Miami, Washington and most other major cities.
San Jose to Puerto Viejo: The trip from the capital of Costa Rica to Puerto Viejo takes you through one
of the most diverse ecosystems in the world. The road first winds through the mountain cloud forest (Braulio
Carrillo National Park) which divides
this lush, virgin country, before entering the agricultural lowland savannah region of the caribbean coast, and
skirting past the Port town of Limon. You arrive in Puerto Viejo after a breathtaking wind-swept coastal drive.
Your choices for this trip are
1) Car Rental (can be arranged at the airport costing $45.00/day, or in advance through Avis,
Hertz, Dollar or any major car rental company via the web at $15.00/day).
2) Taxi ($150.00 approx, but bartering is customary).
3) Local Bus ($10.00 taxi from the airport to the bus station and $7.50 for the bus to Puerto Viejo). Buses are safe and easy.
They depart at 7:00 am, 9:00 am, 12:00 pm and 3:30 pm from San Jose bus terminal, which is a 20-minute ride by taxi
from the airport. Plan to land in San Jose before 1:30 pm if you want to make the entire trip in one day.
4) InterBus Is a private small bus company that will take you to Puerto Viejo for $20.00.
Driving Directions from San Jose to Puerto Viejo: From San Jose take the Highway #32 to Limon ( See Downtown San Jose) and follow the road North to Limon. You will pass the Braulio
Carrillo National Park and the Rainforest Aerial Tram. ( See map to Limon) Continue driving through Guapiles, Siquirres and Matina. Just before
arriving downtown Limon you will pass through a cemetery. Continue on that road for about 1 kilometer and then you will see the
sign on your right to Cahuita/Pto Viejo. Turn here to the right and continue this road straight ahead south the coastline. ( See Downtown Limon) Follow the green route to Puerto Viejo. Please follow the signs to Cahuita, Puerto Vargas and Puerto Viejo. ( See map to Puerto Viejo)
If you continue driving south that road you will end at Punta Cocles, Punta Uva and Manzanillo National Park. Maps are also available from car rental agencies.
